THE LANARK TREE

Several years ago there was a project entitled “My Mental Health is Your State of

Mind”. The goal of this project was to destigmatize mental health and to encourage youth to reach out for help and support. The youth involved created art work of a tree. A tree was chosen as when a tree begins to die we don’t often notice until leaves stop budding and it may be too late. It is similar with ones mental health.

Children and youth may be struggling on the inside but they look “fine” on the

outside. The paintings of the tree depict darkness on the bottom when one feels alone, and sad, yet the top of the tree was painted brighter to represent hope after one reaches out for help and support.

As a therapist I often use this story with youth who are struggling to feel any sense of hope. When I show them the brightness at the top of the tree it gives them a sense of hope, and that things can get better in their life.

My hope is that this analogy will help children and youth, seek help and support during their dark times and maintain hope of brighter days ahead. This analogy has provided hope to many of the youth I have seen over the years. One youth in particular went on to paint their own tree and get a tattoo of a tree as a reminder.

My approach with every person is to offer a compassionate and client-centred counselling experience rooted in evidence-based practices and techniques. I truly believe every individual holds strengths, resilience, and inner resources—even when they may feel out of reach or without hope.

With a respectful and collaborative approach, I walk alongside clients, helping them uncover those strengths, gain more clarity, and move toward meaningful personal goals and positive results. My work is grounded in empathy, empowerment, and a deep commitment to supporting individuals and families as they navigate challenges to create lasting change and inner harmony.
